About 5–10% of people from Melanesia, a group of islands northeast of Australia, have naturally blonde hair — the highest prevalence outside Europe. Yet people from the region have the darkest skin pigmentation outside Africa.

Monstrorum Historia (A History of Monsters), 1642

Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522 — 1605) was an Italian naturalist and physician, also known as Ulysses Aldrovandi, or simply as Aldrovandus. He helped lead the Renaissance movement that placed a renewed emphasis on the study of nature.

One of the many books he wrote was Monstrorum Historia (“A History of Monsters”), a compendium of reported human and animal monstrosities. The book included accounts not only of monstrous natural births but also of entirely imaginary, extremely far-fetched monsters. This sort of juxtaposition was common at the time, since there was not as yet a distinction between the literary and the scientific.

The Jacob sheep is a rare breed of small, piebald colored, polycerate (multi-horned) sheep. They have from two to six horns, though four is most common. An ‘heirloom’ breed, they have been documented in the English countryside since the mid 17th century, though their lineage appears to reach back much farther than that. Appearing in works of Eastern, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean art centuries earlier, the origin of the Jacob sheep may be traced back to the bible, (Genesis 30:31–43) where Jacob is described as selectively breeding sheep of certain type from his father’s flock.

Twin Cats Always Mirror Each Other in Sleep

Scientists are baffled by twin cats, Merry and Pippin, who reportedly always sleep in an exact mirror image of one another.

“Even if we place them in disparate starting positions or in separate rooms, they somehow always wind up sleeping exactly like the other,” said leading cat biologist and feline sleep expert Dr. Tobias Winslow.  ”I’ve never seen anything like it.”

A polysomnogram revealed nothing out of the ordinary about the cats’ brain functions, eye movements, muscle activity, breathing or heart rhythms.  ”We had expected to find that Merry and Pip were synched up on an internal level,” explained Winslow, “but it is literally just in the way they position their bodies for slumber.”

More tests will be done later this month during a scheduled comprehensive sleep study.

Two-Headed Reptile Fossil From Age of Dinosaurs
Not new (it’s from 2006), but tell me if you’ve ever seen a cooler fossil than this? This is a condition called polycephaly, that is rare, but common enough to be found regularly in reptiles. But it is infrequent enough that the odds of catching one in a fossil is pretty amazing.
OK, maybe not better than the fossilized copulating turtles, but close.
